Vancouver Island Motorsports Association (VIMSA) is committed to the creation and development of a permanent drag racing and motorsports facility on Vancouver Island. We love motorsports and know that an Island based facility would be well used. The economic impact of this type of facility would be significant to any community. Be part of our organization and help make this happen. Join the team. Talk with everyone you know who will support this effort. Motorsports builds lasting friendships and is a great family sport. VIMSA is focused on providing entertainment for spectators and participants alike. Learn more about our efforts.

Opportunity Knocks!

As mentioned in the 2019 Year End Message, a private landowner has offered a potential site for our proposed facility. The site is south of Campbell River near the Cranberry Lane turnoff on the Inland Island Highway. As it turned out, the site was too short for a full ¼ mile facility (4000 feet required), so the landowner has offered to acquire additional acreage to accommodate the facility. The cost for him to purchase the additional land is $300,000 and there is a stipulation that it can only be used as a drag strip. We have discussed that a long-term lease would be in order. In preliminary meetings with the regional district, we have confirmed that the industrial zoning has potential for allowing this use.

Summer Update – PROGRESS CONTINUES!
Homalco First Nation has given a letter to the City supporting our project at the airport. The City has engaged a lawyer to define the meaning of “for airport purposes” wording that is in the Crown Grant that gave the airport land to the City. We’re working with the City on the “Drag Racing Facility Select Committee” to find and evaluate land options for a potential drag racing facility in the Campbell River area. We are looking at three potential sites (including the airport). The committee is chaired by Councillor Charlie Cornfield. The other members are Councillor Kermit Dahl, Kris Mailman of Seymour Pacific Developments, Dan Wickham retired lawyer and VIMSA member, and me, Jim Johnson representing VIMSA. The City and Regional District are helping with property info and facilitating meetings. VIMSA is committed to getting a permanent drag racing facility on the Island. Come and see us at Wings & Wheels, Sunday at the Campbell River Airport.
